Colombia Marta and Guillermo
have 10 years of experience working with wood and turning them
into beautiful pieces of art. Thanks to a Colombian government
funded course and hands on workshops 3 years ago, they learned
everything about the guadua*. Their studies included the
types of guadua*, the techniques to prepare it and work with
it, and everything necessary to fulfill all national
and international accepted standards. The guadua is the
strongest between its species. The different types are
classified by the continents. In Asia, people talk about
the bamboo, and in America we have the guadua, guadua macana,
guadua cebolla, guadua macana negra, and guadua
rayada. The guadua only exist in the tropical belt
of Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador; and is stronger and
thicker than the asian bamboo. In Colombia, the guadua is the
natural element most used among the popular and
agricultural communities. Guadua is used to build
houses, club houses, fences, crafty utensils, furniture,
kitchen utensils, and many other decoration items for the
home. The last annual exposition of bamboo was held in
Hannover, Germany, where the colombians showed one of the most
notorious example of the guadua use. A building
named "La Maloca"** was built with the guadua. (about 10
meters) After the german
engineers performed the resistance test, they came
to the conclusion that guadua was amazingly strong and decided
to name it the "plant of steel". *Guadua = A
type of bamboo found only in South America. **La Maloca = a
central cottage in the native villages of South

de experiencia trabajando la madera y convirtiendola en
hermosas piezas de arte. Hace 3 años
y gracias a un curso con talleres patrocinado por
el gobierno Colombiano,
ellos conocieron, trabajaron y aprendieron todo sobre la
guadua.
Sus estudios incluyeron las variedades de la guadua,
las técnicas
para prepararla y trabajarla, y todo lo necesario para llenar
las normas aceptadas nacional e internacionalmente.
La
guadua es dentro de su especie, la variedad mas fuerte y fina
que existe. Las variedades se clasifican de acuerdo a
los continentes.
En
Asia, solo se habla de bambú.
En América,
hablamos de guadua:
guadua
macana, guadua cebolla, guadua macana negra, y guadua
rayada. La guadua solo existe en el cinturón
tropical conformado por Venezuela, Colombia, y Ecuador; y
es mas fuerte, corpulenta, y fina que sus hermanos, el
bambú
asiatico. Dentro del medio Colombiano, la guadua es el
elemento natural de mas aplicaciones practicas entre
las comunidades agricolas y populares. Con la guadua se
construyen casas, casetas, cercos, utensilios artesanales, y
para el hogar, como: muebles, utensilios de cocina, y
decoración.
Un ejemplo bien notorio de su uso, lo mostraron los
colombianos en la última
feria mundial de Hannover, Alemania, donde se construyó
un edificio bautizado "La Maloca"*, con volados de hasta 10
metros y en las pruebas de resistencia que le hicieron los
ingenieros Alemanes en su conclusión
la bautizaron "El Acero
Vegetal" *Maloca = Vivienda central en las aldeas
indigenas de Sur America.
